KANPUR: The crime branch of the Kanpur Police late Monday night arrested builder Haji Wasi, accused in the June 3 violence.
Wasi, against whom police have procured non-bailable warrant (NBW), is accused of funding Hayat Zafar Hashmi, the main accused of the June 3 violence that erupted after Friday prayers following a call to close down the shops as protest against the remarks made on the Prophet by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, at the Parade and its adjoining areas including the Nai Sadak.
“During investigation, we came to know about Haji Wasi’s involvement in June 3 violence. Since then we were looking for him, and we had also procured NBW against him. Police teams were searching for him in Delhi, Lucknow and Kanpur. We arrested Haji Wasi Monday late night from near Amausi Airport in Lucknow,” said joint commissioner of police Anand Prakash Tewari. “Now, we are in the process of producing him in court,” added Tewari.
As per the police, Haji Wasi was the main financer of prime accused Zafar Hayat Hashmi.
The SIT had earlier obtained NBW from the court against him and 18 other accused in the case.
The Kanpur administration had demolished one of the buildings of Haji Wasi after the violence.
Mukhtar Baba, the owner of Baba Biryani, and Hayat Zafar were the main conspirators and Haji Wasi was named as one of the main accused of June 3 violence.
During investigation, it also came to fore that Haji Wasi’s family members were also involved in conspiring the violence.
His son, Abdul Rahman, and many other relatives had supported Haji in instigating the violence.
Abdul Rahman was arrested by the Kanpur Police on June 3. According to the information, Rahman is the one who looks after all the bank accounts, properties and business of his father.
