VARANASI: A DRDO Industry Academia-Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) will be established at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi. An MoU was signed in this regard between IIT(BHU) and DRDO during DefExpo-2022 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat on Thursday.
IIT(BHU) director Prof. Pramod Kumar Jain exchanged the MoU with DRDO chairman Samir V Kamat in the presence of defence minister Rajnath Singh, scientific advisor to the defence minister, G Satheesh Reddy, director general (technology management) of DRDO, Hari Babu Srivastava and several other dignitaries.
“It is a big step towards making the defence sector self-reliant and sustainable in line with the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. The Institute is on the way to set up a DRDO Industry Academia-Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE),” said IIT(BHU) director.
“The initial phase of this centre shall focus on accelerating research under three verticals: Powder metallurgy, functional electronics materials and high power microwave sources and devices,” he said, adding that these research domains were identified with the vision of immediate support towards current defence-related challenges and issues.
Under DIA-CoE, DRDO will establish major technical facilities and infrastructure necessary for the technology development programs under identified verticals.
According to him, the centre will induce goal-oriented research and it would open a pathway to deliver those products of the defence sector that are imported from abroad. DRDO is known for its strength in the defence sector and IIT (BHU) Varanasi will complement and provide support for technological solutions of cutting-edge technologies for defence needs.
This Centre of Excellence will provide a strong platform to establish collaboration between the DRDO scientists and faculty members of IIT (BHU) and will have a great impact on the growth and development of the defence sector. “The focus of this centre would be to promote indigenous defence technologies to reduce India’s defence imports and make India self-reliant in the defence sector,” said Prof. Jain.
Another moment of pride for the Institute during DefExpo-2022 was a second prize in the individual category in the Dare 2 Dream 3 contest conducted by DRDO to Rakesh Kumar Singh of the department of Physics, IIT (BHU). Dare 2 Dream 3 contest is an open contest and invites ideas to solve key challenges in emerging technologies that can help boost India’s defence and aerospace capabilities.
