DHANBAD: While Indians and the Indian diaspora are elated after Rishi Sunak, a person of Indian origin took over as the British prime minister, residents of the fertilizer township of Sindri in Dhanbad are delighted to find one of the sons of the soil in Sunak’s team. Prajwal Pandey (19), a Sindri lad, was among the 30-member core committee of the Sunak campaign team.
Prajwal joined the Conservative party of the UK in 2019 and was invited to join Rishi Sunak’s core campaign team when Rishi fought for the UK PM post in August 2022. An elected member of the UK youth parliament with record votes, Prajwal addressed the UK parliament in 2019 when he was just 16.
“He was in the communications and outreach division of the campaign committee, worked with many senior policy advisers to Rishi and was in regular communication with MPs, ministers and Rishi himself,” Prajwal’s father Rajesh Pandey said.
Rajesh, who works as a software engineer in Britain, said Prajwal highlighted the future tax, income, education, foreign and defence policies of the UK while campaigning for Rishi.
Prajwal’s grandfather Bagish Dutt Pandey still lives in Sindri with his family and Rajesh visited Sindri during the Durga Puja vacation this year. “We are happy that Prajwal is doing well in his academics as well as other social activities,” said his grandfather. His uncle, Amit Pandey, said Prajwal’s sacred thread ceremony was conducted in Sindri a few years ago.
“He studied in King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, Essex, and did extremely well in economics and math,” Rajesh told TOI over the phone.
Rajesh said Prajwal was elected the vice-chairman of Chelmsford Youth Strategy Group in 2019 and co-chairman of the Essex Climate Action Commission in 2020 and worked with senior leaders like Lord Randall, UN chief scientist and peers of the House of Lords in forming a climate policy. His sister, Pranjal, is doing her MBBS at Cambridge University and mother Manisha is a teacher.
