Varanasi: Five days after brutally thrashing a 10-year-old Dalit boy for hours over mobile theft suspicion and posting the video on social media, police arrested one Surendra Ram of Hadisa village under Bardah police station in Azamgarh district late Saturday. Ram’s accomplices are on the run.
Notably, a minor Dalit boy was tied to a pole, badly tortured and thrashed by Surendra Ram and his associates a few days back, who thought that the boy had stolen a mobile phone. The incident took place in full public view. One of the miscreant recorded the video and posted it on social media. The police swung into action on Saturday after watching the clip that went viral on social media and arrested Ram.
ASP City Azamgarh Shailesh Lal on Sunday said that boy’s father Ramkesh Ram filed a complaint with Bardah police, an FIR against Surendra was registered under Section 307, 342, 323, 504, 506, 120B of IPC and 75 Juvenile Justice Act.
Surendra has been arrested, Lal said, while police are trying to identify his other accomplices involved in the crime and they will be behind the bars too.
During initial investigation, it came to light that on October 18, Surendra and his associates raided Ramkesh’s place and asked about his son.
When Ramkesh informed them that his son was playing in the fields, Surendra and his aides reached there and caught the boy. They tied the boy to a pole and brutally thrashed him for hours alleging that he had stolen a mobile phone.
Locals alleged that when the boy was crying in pain and seeking water, the assailants put red chilli powder in his mouth. The incident took place in full public view but no one came forward to save the boy from Surendra and his accomplices, who made the video of brutal thrashing of boy viral on social media.
Ramkesh alleged that after the incident he had alerted local police but no action was taken. After it, he gave an application to SP Azamgarh Anurag Arya, who immediately directed his subordinates to take the boy for medical examination and initiate stern action against the accused.
